What Happens to Elevators When the Power Goes Out?

October 26, 2026

When the power goes out in a high-rise building, one of the first concerns is often the elevators. Do they stop immediately? Does the generator keep them running? And will every elevator still work?

The answer depends on the building’s emergency power system. In many commercial buildings, condos and hotels, backup power is designed to prioritize specific life-safety and essential systems. Elevator operation may be included, but that doesn’t necessarily mean every elevator will continue operating normally during an outage.

Depending on how the building is designed, emergency power may support only certain elevators or allow elevators to operate in a limited or sequential manner. The generator must also have enough capacity to handle the electrical demands of the equipment connected to it. Simply having a backup generator does not guarantee that every building system will receive power.

That’s why emergency power planning is especially important for South Florida high-rises, condos, hotels and commercial properties. Building owners and facility managers should understand which systems are connected to emergency power and how they are expected to operate before an outage happens.

A generator is only one part of an effective emergency power plan. Understanding what it powers—and what it doesn’t—can make a major difference when an outage occurs.

Megawattage provides commercial generator rentals, sales and emergency power solutions throughout South Florida.
