Running a Commercial Generator for 72 Hours: What to Know

When the power goes out for a few hours, a commercial generator does exactly what it was designed to do: keep critical operations running. But what happens when the outage lasts a full day? Or two? Or even 72 hours?

What happens when a generator runs for 72 hours straight? The short answer is that many commercial generators are designed for extended operation, but running continuously for several days requires more than simply letting the generator run.

During a prolonged outage, fuel becomes one of the biggest concerns. A generator that has plenty of fuel for an afternoon outage may require multiple refueling visits over a three-day period. Fuel consumption depends on the size of the generator and how much electrical load it is carrying, which is why knowing your expected runtime before an emergency matters.

Long runtimes also mean the generator needs attention while it’s operating. Oil levels, coolant, operating temperature, filters and overall performance should be monitored.
