Can You Refuel a Generator While It’s Running?

During an extended power outage, a generator may need to operate for hours—or even days. That raises an important question: Can you refuel a generator while it’s running?

For many portable generators, the safest practice is to shut the generator down and allow it to cool before adding fuel. Fuel spilled onto hot engine components can create a serious fire hazard. Commercial generator systems, however, may be designed differently and can include larger fuel tanks, external fuel systems or equipment that allows fuel supplies to be managed without interrupting critical power.
