A backup generator can sit quietly for months without being needed. But when the power finally goes out, that’s not the time to find out something has changed since its last run.

Long periods of inactivity can create problems that aren’t always obvious. Batteries can lose charge, fuel can degrade or become contaminated, fluids can develop issues, and belts, hoses, connections, or other components may deteriorate over time. Even if the generator starts during a quick test, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s ready to carry a building’s actual electrical load for an extended outage.

Before relying on a generator that has been sitting for months, it should be properly inspected and tested. That includes checking the battery and charging system, fuel and fluid levels, filters, belts and hoses, visible leaks, and the overall condition of the unit. A load test can also help confirm that the generator can perform when real demand is placed on it.
