The First 24 Hours After a Major South Florida Power Outage

A major South Florida power outage can turn from an inconvenience into an operational problem quickly. For businesses and commercial properties, the first 24 hours can reveal exactly how prepared—or unprepared—a facility really is.

Hour 1: The Backup Plan Takes Over

Utility power goes down and the emergency power system is put to the test. Generators should start, automatic transfer switches should respond, and designated systems begin operating on backup power. This is when problems such as generator failure, insufficient capacity or equipment that wasn’t properly connected to emergency power can become apparent.

Hour 6: Fuel and Building Operations Matter

Several hours into an outage, attention starts shifting toward runtime. How much fuel is available? How heavily is the generator loaded? HVAC, elevators, pumps, refrigeration and other systems may also become bigger concerns depending on what the emergency power system was designed to support.

Hour 12: The Outage Is No Longer Short-Term

By this point, fuel consumption becomes increasingly important. Facilities relying on continuous generator power need to know their remaining fuel supply and have a plan for replenishment. Waiting until the tank is nearly empty to arrange a delivery can create unnecessary risk, particularly during a widespread outage when demand for fuel and service is high.

Hour 24: Planning Makes the Difference

After a full day without utility power, generator runtime, fuel availability and equipment reliability all become critical. Facilities with established emergency procedures, adequate generator capacity and a fuel-delivery plan are in a much stronger position to continue operating.

A generator can provide power during an outage, but preparation determines how useful that backup power will be as the hours add up. Understanding your generator’s capabilities, fuel requirements and emergency procedures before an outage can make the first 24 hours far easier to manage.
